India vs Bangladesh 2024 T20I series: Abhishek Sharma, Jitesh Sharma in line for selection, says report

New Delhi: The announcement for the India cricket team squad for T20I series against Bangladesh is expected shortly. Ace southpaw Abhishek Sharma is back in contention for the opening spot. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma is set to compete with Ishan Kishan for the role of second keeper in the team. Additionally, it remains uncertain whether Yashasvi Jaiswal will be available for the tournament.

After the IND vs BAN Tests, the Men in Blue will have a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. Rested for this series is Shubman Gill, who will be primarily under workload management to prepare for the following 3-test matches against New Zealand. An opening has thus been provided for the spot of an opener in the team.

Now, Abhishek Sharma is right in the contention for a call-up to the Indian team with some great shows in IPL 2024. For his marvellous southpaw bashing all through the tournament, Sharma proved himself a well-chronicled name in helping Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) end up in the finals. Now after making an international debut in T20Is against Zimbabwe, Sharma is geared up and ready to face Bengal Tigers in the series ahead.

Ruturaj Gaikwad is likely to come in as the ideal replacement for Shubman Gill, who has been rested for the matches. Yashasvi Jaiswal also looks likely to be rested for at least one match, which would open doors for Abhishek Sharma to capitalize on the opportunity. Though Jaiswal has been that vital young savior in all formats, there are considerable apprehensions about the T20I series, although the Test matches against New Zealand take priority.

Ishan Kishan should get another opportunity with Team India. The southpaw had missed out on a BCCI Central Contract earlier this year, but the news coming in as of late has revealed that he has started playing domestic cricket again. He can once be back in contention for the place in the squad again. He might well secure his call-up based on his excellence in these domestic tournaments.

Meantime, Jitesh Sharma will also be competing to make it to the second wicketkeeper’s slot in the side. In IPL 2023 Jitesh was the favored wicket-keeper, but during the ICC T20 World Cup, he was benched in favour of Rishabh Pant. Fortune has not been smiling on the Punjab Kings (PBKS) wicket-keeper as he did not do well during a very dismal IPL 2024 season. His show in the domestic circuit will help him gain a ticket back to the side.

But now with Sanju Samson tipped to be the number 1 keeper, it is a two way fight for the second keeper’s spot in the team.
