0

Ravichandran Ashwin is going from strength-to-strength in the ongoing two-match Test series against Bangladesh. On Day 1 of the 2nd Test against Bangladesh at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, Ashwin set a new landmark with the wicket Bangla skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Ashwin trapped Shanto in front, plumb leg-before for 31, to pick up his 420th wicket in Asia. With this wicket, the off-spinner surpassed former India captain and leg-spinner Anil Kumble – who claimed 419 wickets in Asia.

The Rajasthan Royals all-rounder also moved into 2nd position on the table with bowlers who have claimed most wickets in Asia. Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan leads the way with 612 out of his 800 wickets coming in Asia.

Overall Ashwin now has 523 wickets in his 102nd Test match with 37 five-wicket hauls and 8 ten-wicket hauls to his name so far. Ashwin’s historic meant that Bangladesh ended the rain-curtailed opening day of the 2nd Test at 107 for 3 in 35 overs.

Among other top wicket-takers in Asia, former Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Rangana Herath claimed 354 wickets while former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh had 300 wickets to his name. Ashwin can add more records to his name over the course of this Test match.

If India manage to beat Bangladesh in the 2nd Test and Ashwin scored at least 57 more runs, then the Tamil Nadu all-rounder will become the 2nd cricketer after Ravindra Jadeja to have 2,000-plus runs and 200-plus wickets in Test match wins.

In fact, Ashwin will be the 1st cricketer with 2,000-plus runs and 300 wickets in Test wins as he has claimed 369 wickets in victories for Team India.

Earlier, India’s young pacer Akash Deep makes early inroads, but Bangladesh bounce back with a strong partnership on the opening day of the second Test at Green Park on Friday. At the end of the first session, Bangladesh posted a score of 74 for 2 with Mominul Haque and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto unbeaten with scores of 17 and 28, respectively.

Under overcast conditions, ball swinging and plenty of bounce on offer, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj tried to make early inroads by extracting everything that was on offer.
