City Council passes bill to decriminalize jaywalking: What happens next?
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Jaywalking in New York City could soon be legal.
City Council passed a bill on Thursday to decriminalize it. NYPD officers issue hundreds of jaywalking tickets each year, the majority of them to people of color, city data showed.
Over 90% of jaywalking tickets issued in 2023 were to Black and Latino pedestrians, according to city data.
The bill now heads to Mayor Eric Adams' desk.
