A pregnant woman pushing a stroller was struck and severely injured by a vehicle Wednesday evening while crossing a Fairfield roadway, the vehicle narrowly missing the toddler inside the stroller, but her unborn child died, Fairfield police officials said.

Department dispatchers received a call at about 7:18 p.m. on the report of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision at East Tabor Avenue near Manor Place. The department’s Traffic Unit immediately responded and took over the investigation.

The driver remained on scene and has been cooperative with police, according to a department social media posting.

The woman, who was not identified in the post, was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and she reportedly remains in critical condition.

Investigators are working to notify family members.

Police officials do not believe impaired driving was a contributing factor, but the investigation remains ongoing and no additional details were released at press time Thursday.

The city’s latest vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision prompted Fairfield police officials to post on social media Thursday afternoon that “in less than 24 hours this week, two devastating vehicle versus pedestrian collisions have rocked the city.”

Additionally, in just the last 30 days, the city has experienced five such pedestrian collisions with injuries, including the two most recent ones, the post’s author noted, adding that there have been seven injury collisions with alcohol as a factor and eight unsafe-speed injury collisions.
