Travellers took off from the major London airport at 8.45am, and were expected to touch down at their destination at 10.15am.

But FlightRadar revealed the Airbus A320 was diverted while flying over Northamptonshire before making an emergency landing at Manchester Airport.

Fire service crews were called to the tarmac after a “technical issue” was confirmed on board.

A flight tracking account posted on X “British Airways flight BA1306 diverted to Manchester a short time ago under emergency conditions due to smoke and fumes in the cockpit.”

A Manchester Airport spokesman said although the issue was not serious, it was “treated as an emergency”.

“In situations like this they’re always treated as an emergency regardless of the severity to be on the safe side, which means emergency services attend,” they said.

“Fire service have attended and given the all clear.”

A British Airways spokesperson said: “Our aircraft was diverted as a precaution because of a suspected technical issue.

“We’re sorry to our customers for the disruption to their journeys and our teams are working to get them on their way again as quickly as possible.”
