Michael Bublé Admits Super Bowl Commercial Ripped Off 'SNL'

Michael Bublé is coming clean about his 2019 Super Bowl commercial for Bubly sparkling water, which the newly-installed The Voice coach now admits ripped off a sketch from his 2010 Saturday Night Live appearance.

The Canadian singer and songwriter discussed the spot with Late Night host Seth Meyers this week, who had actually written the sketch in question. Bublé had been the musical guest when Jon Hamm was hosting the season 35 episode, and the pair played fictional versions of themselves in a bit about a restaurant called "Hamm & Bublé" which served up—you guessed it—pork products and champagne. The crux of the sketch was of course mispronouncing Bublé's name so it sounded like "bubbly."

"I remember I was so excited when I read it. I was like, 'This is so funny. This is so good,'" Bublé said of the sketch, which Meyers admitted was one of his favorite things he had ever written.

Years later, Bublé said that he got a call from his manager about doing a Super Bowl commercial for PepsiCo, which had just launched the sparkling beverage in 2018. The 49-year-old was with his sister at the time, who raved about the product, prompting him to take the job.

"So I said, 'Well, send me whatever the concept is,'" Bublé recalled. "And they send me the concept, and my first thought was, 'You stole this from Seth!'" "Can I tell you something funny?" Meyers asked. "That was my first reaction too!"

"When I saw it, it was so funny because someone goes, 'They stole it from you!' the host continued. "I'm like, 'I just pronounced his name different. It wasn't like ... I came there pretty naturally."

Yet, jokes aside, it all worked out in the end, because Bublé said he still works with the brand to this day. "I still can't get it right, Bublé, Bubly ... It tastes good though when you mix it with my booze," he quipped, referring to his Fraser & Thompson whiskey brand.
