While viewers know that Polly and Adam have slept together, the rest of the cast learn that tonight when expert Paul C Brunson challenges Adam by taking him to task over his lack of intimacy towards Holly since.

Quizzed about why he has been cold with her, Adam says he doesn’t want to give her the wrong impression.

“If I’m affectionate with her and cuddling kissy with her, I don’t want to give her the wrong idea because I don’t want to hurt her,” Adam explains.

But Paul is having none of it, firing back: “But you are married and you have already had sex.”

This prompts gasps from the group watching on.

“I didn’t know that,” Nathan says to Lacey, while Keiran coves his mouth and Eve has her head in her hands.

Trying to explain his reasons for having sex with Polly, Adam counters: “That felt natural at the time, you know what I mean?”

Paul, however, isn’t pulling any punches.

“It’s nonsense, my man. It’s like you want to swim in the pool, but you don’t want to get wet.”

When the experts then turn to Polly and ask how it feels to be back in the friend zone after being intimate, she lets her feelings be known.

“I mean, it’s not ideal because I think when I’m in a relationship I am very sexually driven towards someone, like that’s just natural, isn’t it and I haven’t pushed that because I’m not having the rejection from someone again.”

Holly then turns emotional and breaks down in tears as she reflects on pain from past relationships.

“In my last relationship, I was rejected so much to the point now, well, I’m not giving anything to anyone. I’m not forcing it, she sobs. “I don’t want to. If I’ve got a force it, then it’s not there and I shouldn’t have to tell him to do something because he should want to do it.”

Mel has some tough words for Adam[/caption]

She continues: “And he’s not you’re not showing me anything that you like me at all apart from just being a nice person.”

Things turn even more uncomfortable when Adam goes on to explain he is looking for someone who is “perfect” for him.

Unimpressed, expert Mel Schilling fires back: “You have this incredible woman sitting next to you. Not only is she gorgeous, she connects with you. You have fun together, but you’re sitting here and saying, ‘I want perfection.'”

Attempting to backpedal, Adam adds:” I don’t look at her and think like she’s not attractive or anything, like she’s an attractive woman. It’s just… there’s that little bit of something missing.”

Mafs couples that have stood the test of time

Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby.

The pair couldn’t keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam’s Doncaster home.

Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau.

Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December.

Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: “I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out – and excited for everything to come.”

Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019.

Owen recalled: “I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work.

“While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in.

“The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if I signed up?’

“A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.”

Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson.

Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna’s vegan lifestyle, the show’s first same sex pairing are still going strong.

They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod.

Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: “We’re not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship.”

When Mel then comments that Adam is holding back, he lets his guard down and admits he is also scared of rejection.

He reveals: “I just don’t like talking about my emotions and, like, I don’t want to get hurt, you know what I mean?”

As Mel points out that Polly is saying the same thing, will Adam start to see their relationship in a new light?

Married At First Sight continues tonight at 9pm on E4 and streams on Channel 4.
