Emerson’s early struggles at Milan

Emerson’s spell at the Rossoneri has not started on the ideal note following the right-back’s £13m move from Tottenham in the summer.

The 25-year-old has come under a lot of criticism from the Italian press for his performances (MilanNews) and some experts have already written him off as a flop (The Athletic).

The Brazilian has also been the butt of jokes among some Spurs fans on social media, who are relieved that he is no longer Tottenham’s problem.

Cafu bullish about Emerson

However, Cafu, who knows a thing or two about what makes a world-class right-back, is confident that his compatriot will turn things around at this new club.

The World Cup-winning star praised the character of the former Spurs man and suggested that he will prove a valuable player for Paulo Fonesca’s men this season.

Cafu told Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) about Emerson: “He’s very good and, even if he didn’t play much at Tottenham, I am convinced that he will do very well at Milan.

“He’s young and if he gets going, he can give a lot to the team because he has strength, determination and ‘garra’ [grit in Portuguese].”

Emerson shows promise in the Milan derby

Even though the right-back might not have had the start he would have wanted at his new club, he did deliver a solid display in the Milan derby on Sunday as his side emerged with a 2-1 win.

GiveMeSport gave Emerson a rating of eight out of 10 for his display and wrote: “Found plenty of joy when overlapping down the right flank, picking out some great areas with a few very nice crosses.”

One Football were also complimentary about the Brazilian’s display, writing: “So much better from him tonight. Yes, Inter did still create chances on the flanks but he put up a good fight, in addition to actually contributing in attack with some nice crosses.

“A bit rash on the goal conceded, but in fairness, he got no support from the midfield there.”
