Feds to file criminal charges in Iranian hack of Trump campaign: report

Federal prosecutors plan to file criminal charges stemming from an Iranian hack of top Trump campaign advisers, according to a report.

ABC News, citing sources familiar with the matter, said the charges will be announced Friday in connection with the hack, in which Iranians accessed data and files from email counts of Trump's advisers.

The report comes days after the Trump campaign said U.S. intelligence warned the former president of "real and specific" threats from Iran to assassinate him.

"President Trump was briefed earlier today by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States," the statement said.

Iran has previously rejected similar claims.

Federal authorities have concluded that the Iranian government was behind hacking attacks against the campaigns of Trump and Joe Biden.

The FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said in a statement to media outlets Monday that they have seen "increasingly aggressive Iranian activity during this election cycle, specifically involving influence operations targeting the American public and cyber operations targeting Presidential campaigns."

“The IC is confident that the Iranians have through social engineering and other efforts sought access to individuals with direct access to the Presidential campaigns of both political parties. Such activity, including thefts and disclosures, are intended to influence the U.S. election process."
