Final Fantasy director crushes people’s hopes of the long-rumoured FF9 remake

ONE of the most prolific rumours in the gaming industry is that a full remake for Final Fantasy 9 is in development.

Some of the most popular games in the series are the Final Fantasy 7 remakes, which currently span four games.

As you may expect, the mainline games Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are the most popular.

However, the spin-offs Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade and Crisis Core – Final Fantasy 7 Reunion have both been hugely successful.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the third and final instalment in the FF7 remake trilogy, and they are still eager for more.

After FF7, Final Fantasy 9 was the first game that came to players’ minds for the next potential remake target.

We sat down with Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida to talk about his game, but one of his more interesting answers was about potential remakes.

Yoshida-san has been focused on FF14 for almost a decade, but we wanted to know if any other Final Fantasy games had caught his eye.

We asked him if he could remake any of the Final Fantasy games in the FF7 Remake style, which game he’d choose.

Yoshida-san replied: “That’s a super tough question. The one that I would like to make myself would be Final Fantasy 3 I think.

“Of course I do know there are requests for Final Fantasy 9 to be made, but when you think about Final Fantasy 9, it’s a game with huge volume.

“When you think about all of that volume, I wonder if it’s possible to remake that as a single title.

“It’s a difficult one. It is a tough question.”

Upon hearing Yoshida-san’s answer it felt as if he is saying a Final Fantasy 9 remake isn’t in the works despite all of the rumours.

However, if you look at the words a little closer, it could suggest that a FF9 remake could be on the cards, but that like the FF7 remake it won’t come out as a single game.

If the FF9 remake is in development, then Yoshida-san makes it seem like it will be released as a trilogy.

Despite Yoshida-san’s words, this is still all speculation, and a remake for FF9 whether it comes as one game or three has still not been confirmed.
