Knockout Vs Collazo confirmed!
Earlier this week Frankie Pinero (@FrankiePinero) reported that a deal was done for a world title unification bout between Minimumweight kings Knockout CP Freshmart (25-0, 9) [AKA Thammanoon Niyomtrong] and Oscar Collazo (10-0, 7), who would put their WBA "super" and WBO titles on the line in November in Saudi Arabia. It has now been confirmed that the bout will indeed take place, with Golden Boy Promotions pushing hard for the bout and securing it.
Originally the plan had been for Collazo to defend his belt against Mexican challenger Edwin Cano Hernandez (13-2-1, 4). The Knockout Vs Collazo bout has been agreed on the basis that the winner will take on Hernandez next time out, giving Hernandez a shot as the unified title.
For Knockout the bout will be his 13th title defense and see him look to continue the longest active reign in the sport. For Collazo the bout will be his 4th since winning the title in May 2023.
Notably the bout will also be for the Ring Magazine title, with the winner becoming the first ever Ring Magazine Minimumweight champion, and a rare case of a unification a 105lbs. Among the more recent ones are two, are the sensational war between Katsunari Takayama and Francisco Rodriguez Jr, for the IBF and WBO titles in 2014, the peculiar vacant title unification bout between the aforementioned Takayama and Go Odaira, also for the WBO and IBF titles in 2014, and the sensational WBA/WBC title bout between Akira Yaegashi and Kazuto Ioka, all the way back in 2012.
