VOLNEY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- An Oswego County deputy sheriff was killed in a crash Wednesday morning while responding to a call, Sheriff Don Hilton confirmed to NewsChannel 9.

The deputy is 33-year-old Cailee Campbell.

Deputy Campbell's cruisers, with lights and sirens activated, was hit by another vehicle at the intersection of County Route 176 and Rowlee Road in the Town of Volney.

"It was simply an accident," Sheriff Hilton said in an interview with NewsChannel 9. Earlier, her said the deputy's cruiser was "T-boned."

"There's some pretty shaken-up people, especially her platoon mates," said Sheriff Hilton. "They were on scene doing life-saving measures."

Deputy Campbell was relatively new to her department, having joined the force 17 months ago. She worked in various units of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office for four years, including graduating from its academy.

Campbell graduated from Jordan-Elbridge High School in 2009, the district confirmed to NewsChannel 9.

"She fought hard to get where she was and she was doing a fantastic job for us," said Sheriff Don Hilton.

Hilton had just seen the deputy within the last week. He recalled: "She was a fantastic young lady, always had a smile on her face. She loved the job. She was excelling at it. It's a great loss."

The Sheriff wasn't aware of what kind of call Deputy Campbell was responding to.

He said: "I'm going to make an assumption here the (other) driver simply did not see (the deputy). It was dark. It was rainy. I don't want to portray there wasn't any fault of the other driver. That's not the case at all."
