Martin O’Neill offers ‘pressure’ advice to Tottenham ‘winner’ Ange Postecoglou
Martin O’Neill urges Ange Postecoglou not to flaunt his achievements and put himself under any more pressure than necessary.
Postecoglou always wins in his second season
There has been a lot said and written about Postecoglou’s claim he always wins trophies during his second season at clubs.
When the comment has been thrown back at the Australian in light of Tottenham’s recent defeats, he has doubled down, pointing out that he merely stated a fact about his career (Sky Sports).
Despite Spurs’ struggles at the start of the season, Postecoglou has continued to be adamant that winning silverware remains the objective, even adding that he would consider himself to have failed if Tottenham do not win something this season (Football.London).
Postecoglou told not to put himself under pressure
However, O’Neill believes that the 59-year-old is inviting unnecessary pressure on himself, remarking that no one cares about his past achievements.
The former Aston Villa boss told talkSPORT about Postecoglou: “He is a winner. He has won trophies in his second season. If I had any advice for Ange then I would say ‘don’t put yourself under that type of pressure’.
“When you’re a manager, you feel like you need respect and if you feel like that is dwindling or disappearing then you can remind yourself (about your achievements) but don’t remind everyone else.
“I’ve experienced it myself – no one cares. Remind yourself about it, that’s all that really matters. Sometimes you have to defend yourself in one aspect or another but as I’ve found out, no one cares or listens to you. Just go and win the games.”
Simon Jordan agreed with O’Neill’s assessment, claiming that Postecoglou is displaying some immaturity by talking to the media in the manner that he is.
The former Crystal Palace owner added: “Martin’s completely right. Jose Mourinho got himself caught in that trap as well and brought himself into the eye of the media.
“As much of a big admirer I am of Ange, I do think he needs to be a bit smarter with the media at some times. I think he invites these types of conversations with the media when he makes these sorts of observations, similar to the free-kicks last year.
“Ange is constantly being irritated by the media and I understand why, but you’re a product of media and entertainment. When he starts telling people he’ll win something in his second season, there’s a bit of immaturity around that, I think.”

While Ange did not have to make the trophy comment, I wonder if he did that strategically to send a message to the club and the players rather than out of ego. Perhaps the Australian is trying to change the club’s mentality by making it clear that anything other than winning silverware is not good enough.
