Tottenham players step up against Brentford

Ange Postecoglou will be delighted with what he saw from his side against Brentford, with impressive performances from back to front.

The Spurs boss would have been particularly pleased to see Dominic Solanke get off the mark in front of goal and the under-fire Brennan Johnson make it two goals in two games to silence his critics.

However, the player who was head and shoulders above the rest was James Maddison, who dictated play for the home side from a slightly deeper role than usual.

Two Spurs representatives in Team of the Week

The Data Analysis platform, WhoScored, have crunched the numbers and they have Destiny Udogie as the other Tottenham man in the Team of the Week alongside Maddison.

The platform gave the left-back a rating of 7.78 and wrote about the Italian: “Completing our back four is Tottenham left-back Destiny Udogie, who produced a strong performance in Spurs’ 3-1 home victory over Brentford on Saturday.

“The Italy international managed six tackles, three clearances, four interceptions and one successful dribble, to return a WhoScored rating of 7.78.”

Unsurprisingly, Maddison got the highest rating across the entirety of the Premier League in Matchweek 5, being handed a score of 9.42 for his outstanding showing against the Bees.

The platform reveals that the England international, who netted his first goal on Saturday, made three key passes and seven successful dribbles, which is the highest any player has managed in a single game this season.

Maddison now purring

Maddison has been threatening to deliver this kind of performance since the start of the season and the former Leicester City man showed on Saturday that he can be unplayable when he is at his best.

While the attacking midfielder’s creativity, quick feet and vision were in full evidence, the way he was running away from players in midfield suggested that he is also quite sharp physically at the moment, which was not the case in the second half of last season.

If Maddison can continue producing performances like this, Spurs will be a hard side to stop this season.
