Tottenham have built a young squad

Tottenham have changed their recruitment strategy since Lange and Ange Postecoglou arrived, with the club now building for the future by prioritising young, up-and-coming players.

Spurs now have one of the youngest squads in the Premier League and Postecoglou has spoken about wanting the break the old adage about not winning anything with kids (Football.London).

Some Tottenham fans, however, might wonder if this side has the experience and know-how to get across the line in big moments.

Lange believes the squad has balance

Lange has now said that Tottenham are constantly trying to achieve a balance between experience and youth so that they can set themselves up for sustained success in the long term.

He admitted that there is a lot of excitement at Hotspur Way about some of the young talent now at the club.

The Dane told Football.London: “I think when you’re building a squad for sustainable success over the years, I think to have a different age profile within each position is actually quite important.

“So if we take our midfield at the moment, we will have three or four players around the peak age of 25 to 27 and we will have three of four players who are younger who can push the players as they are here to compete and already now can play in the Premier League and all the cup competitions but they’re not at the same stage in their career.

“To have a good balanced squad I think that is actually quite important and I think some of the younger players we have signed this summer are some of the brightest talents in European football as well.”

Lange explained that the transition between the academy and the first-team at Tottenham is also a lot smoother, given the alignment in approach.

He added: “In terms of our academy, that is so important for us, it’s the heart of every football club and certainly our football club both now and has been in the past as well. I think the alignment between the academy and first-team now under Ange is incredible.

“There are players from the academy who train with the first team each week and under the leadership of Andy Scoulding, we have uplifted our loans programme as well because in England the second team cannot play in the division.

“The loans programme is quite important and we are making new investments in the academy as well, so I would say the future of the academy looks very bright and it is something we are working ever so hard on on a day-to-day basis.”

Tottenham’s poor record in producing players

Tottenham’s academy set-up has struggled to produce players consistently for the first-team over the last decade.

Only Harry Kane, Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga have made the step up in that time to establish themselves in the senior squad.

However, one would expect that to change over the next few years, given the outstanding talents currently in the club’s Under-21 and Under-18 set-up.
