A MUM died after being hit by a train while walking her dog – in a tragic accident.

Jan Mullen, 54, was attempting to cross the tracks in West Lancashire with dog Fred, when the train struck her.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at 7.25pm but were unable to save her.

An inquest at Preston Coroner’s Court yesterday concluded there was no evidence that Jan had intended to take her own life.

The train was thought to have been travelling at 60mph – the speed limit in that particular area.

The driver then desperately slammed on the brakes – but was too late to avoid Jan.

Her husband, Dr Daryl Mullen, posted on Facebook shortly after her death: “We all believe it may have been a simple accident and her poor vision coupled with panic not knowing where Fred was.”

Area Coroner Kate Bisset confirmed: “Jan Elizabeth Mullen died on April 25, 2024, at Chapel Lane, Parbold, from injuries she sustained having been struck by a moving train.

“Mrs Mullen was out walking her dog when she stepped onto the tracks shortly after the train had rounded a corner.”

Jan’s death has been ruled as “death by misadventure” instead of “accidental death”.

This applies to cases where the death has occurred as a consequence of an intentional risk taken by the victim.

The physiotherapist was a mum to two daughters.
