Odisha Tribal: In a bizarre incident, a man demanding a house for himself in Odisha’s Sundargarh district besieged a government school and used arrows and stones to deter any pursuers who attempted to oust him from the premises, injuring three people in the process. As per the police, the tribal man, identified as Dhani Munda, was finally arrested after an iron mesh was used to capture him on Wednesday evening.

A senior official said it took 6o policemen, fire brigade and district voluntary force to capture Munda with the help of an iron mesh and a drone camera. The accused, a tribal from Phuljhar village, was arrested and taken to the local police station, he said.

Giving details, police said that Dhani Munda had laid siege to the Badjal Government Primary School under Mahulpada police station in Sundargarh since Saturday afternoon to press for his demand for a house and other property from the government. Munda, who had been staying on the terrace of the three-storied school building, fired arrows with his bow, and shot rocks with his slingshot to deter anyone who tried to dislodge him.

Two police officers and the school headmaster sustained injuries as Munda fired arrow and rocks at them, they said.

According to the police, Munda had barged into the school on Saturday afternoon following and was involved in an altercation with the headmaster following which the tribal used his slingshot to drive him out and locked the school building from inside, essentially laying siege to the premises.

Munda threatened to shoot arrows at anyone who threatened to oust, including a group of local youths who had threatened to scale the roof. After failed attempts, locals called the cops and following which inspector in charge of Mahulpada police station, Suresh Chandra Pradhan, reached the spot with his team.

However, when Pradhan tried to climb the roof using a ladder, Munda shot him with an arrow through his hand, resulting in the officer being hospitalised, police said, adding that another officer was also injured by the man using an arrow.

Later, police used a public address system to ask him about what his demands were in exchange for leaving the school building. The man dropped a piece of paper on which he had written down his list of demands, including a residential building with a boundary wall and garden for him, besides property worth Rs 100 crore in the village, said an official.

Munda was finally captured after Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Bonai, Swaraj Devta, reached the spot along with fire brigade personnel. A group of policemen diverted his attention, keeping in occupied on one side of the roof, while a team of fire brigade and district voluntary force personnel scaled the terrace from the other side and grabbed him while using an iron mesh to stop incoming arrows and stones from the accused.

In a statement, Rourkela SP Brijesh Ray said a drone camera was used to pinpoint Munda’s location on the roof, adding that the man had been consuming the ration stored for students for the past days of his bizarre siege.

The school had been shut from Monday due to obvious reasons and the students were attending classes in a nearby institute, the officer said.
