What is legal window tint in Kansas?

0

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Working for you, 27 News reached out to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) to find out what is legally permissible for window tint and to see how often citations are issued.

Window tint cannot be so dark that it blocks more than 65% of light, according to the KHP. This means that window tint must allow 35% of light to pass through or it is against the law.

KHP spokeswoman April McCollum told 27 News that Kansas Statute 8-1749a applies to all side windows to the left and right of the driver, side windows behind the driver and for the rear window. According to Kansas Statute 8-1749a, tint can only be used on a front windshield if it is applied along the top of the windshield.

The KHP said no reflective tint is allowed, regardless of the location.

"Excessive window tint can significantly reduce visibility, especially at night, leading to an increased risk of crashes for not only the driver but others traveling on Kansas roadways," McCollum said. "This can also be a safety hazard to law enforcement and all emergency responders."

In 2023, the KHP issued 1,011 citations and 3,394 warnings for window tint violations. As of Sept. 22, 2024, the KHP has issued 937 citations and 2,540 warnings.
