Tottenham last won a trophy back in 2008

With Tottenham always setting their sights on Champions League qualification, they have sometimes not treated the Europa League with the respect the competition deserves over the past decade and a half.

One would expect that to change this time around as Ange Postecoglou has made it clear that his objective this season is to win silverware.

The Europa League enters a new format this season, with teams having eight group-stage matches rather than the usual four, with Spurs kicking off their campaign with a clash against Qarabag this Thursday.

Heung-min Son wants to win the Europa League

Ahead of the showdown against the Azerbaijani side, the Tottenham captain made it clear that the objective is to lift the trophy at San Mames in Bilbao next year, with the forward confessing that he is at an age where every competition is extremely valuable to him.

Son told journalist Gun Lee (for Sport Chosun 21/09/24): “I think every competition we are in is a competition worth challenging for. To me, every competition every year is an opportunity that I want to challenge for. We’re preparing well, it’s a good competition, and I think we can play well in it if we take it seriously.

“The first step is always important. I hope we can get a good start on Thursday. I am not 18 or 19 anymore, so every season to me is as valuable as gold. Every competition is very important and precious to me. Whether it be the Europa League, the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup, or the Premier League, I’m giving my absolutely everything for every game I play.

“The way I prepare and the way I live every day is focused on each one of these games. I hope to rest well and condition myself well for Thursday so that I can deliver another good game and victory for Spurs.”

While one would expect Ange to rotate his side a bit and hand some key players a rest, one would hope that he does not make eight or nine changes as he did against Coventry.

It would be prudent to seal qualification within the first five games before using the final few matches to test out his bench strength.
