Alasdair Gold believes that Tottenham’s starting eleven against Qarabag could have a major surprise, with one 17-year-old potentially set for his first start for the senior side.

Tottenham’s European journey begins

Tottenham begin their Europa League campaign with a clash against Qarabag at home on Thursday, with the Lilywhites going into the game as massive favourites.

In fact, Spurs are one of the sides tipped to go all the way in the competition this season and one would expect Ange Postecoglou to take the tournament seriously, given that he has repeatedly spelled out his intention to win silverware this season.

At the same time, the Australian will want to rotate his squad and give some of his key men a rest, given the packed schedule Spurs have over the next couple of months.

A surprising inclusion on the cards?

Gold does expect Postecoglou to hand opportunities to youngsters and some of the fringe players, with the journalist suggesting that the Spurs boss might even throw Mikey Moore in.

The Football.London reporter suggested that this might be the ideal opportunity for the 17-year-old to showcase his qualities, given the qualify of the opposition Tottenham are up against.

He said on the Gold and Guest talk Tottenham podcast: “You’re looking at potentially five spots there, I think, for young players. So we know Mikey Moore will take one of them. These players are from the B list.

“Mikey Moore, I wouldn’t even be shocked if he starts, because why not? It’s like the perfect game to do it. It’s a low-risk game, the first of eight group-stage matches.

“With no disrespect to Qarabag, you’re playing a team from the Azerbaijani league, and like I said, there is no kind of risk to it.”

Excitement at Spurs about Moore

Moore is widely seen as a potential future star at Hotspur Way, with the youngster becoming the youngest player to represent Tottenham in Premier League history when he was handed his debut by Postecoglou towards the end of last season.

The winger, who penned his first professional contract with the Lilywhites back in the summer, impressed in his first-team outings in pre-season.

Postecoglou has spoken in glowing terms about the teenager and confirmed last month that the attacker will get minutes this season (Beanyman Sports).
