Tottenham face Qarabag in Europa League opener

The North Londoners kick off their Europa League campaign on Thursday evening when they host Azerbaijan outfit Qarabag at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to the press at the club’s Hotspur Way training base this afternoon.

Tottenham have not played a European fixture since March 2023 when a 0-0 draw against AC Milan saw Antonio Conte’s side eliminated from the Champions League having lost the first leg 1-0 in Italy.

Postecoglou has provided an update on his Spurs squad ahead of the visit of Qarabag, who currently top their domestic league and arrive into the fixture on the back of a 4-0 home win over Neftci.

Central defender Cristian Romero is suspended for the fixture as a result of his dismissal against AC Milan, while Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon are ineligible.

Richarlison and Wilson Odobert remain sidelined for Spurs, Odobert suffered a hamstring injury during the 2-1 win over Coventry City in the Carabao Cup.

He told the official Spurs site: “We’re looking good. Nothing from the weekend in terms of injuries, everyone pulled up really well so no issues there.

“Apart from the obvious absences (Cristian) Romero, (Djed) Spence and (Sergio) Reguilon who trained today but who, for different reasons, are ineligible.”

Postecoglou is likely to make plenty of changes

While the Spurs manager often claims he takes it one game at a time, there is no doubt he will have one eye on Sunday’s Premier League trip to Manchester United.

With Romero serving his one-match suspension, Radu Dragusin will be expected to come into the defence.

Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr will all be likely to start the match having been on the bench for Saturday’s 3-1 win against Brentford.

Also expect plenty of academy starlets to be named among the replacements, with Tottenham having to name 12 substitutes in line with competition rules.
