Heung-min Son comments on potential new contract with Tottenham
Spurs captain, Heung-min Son, has been facing the press today ahead of his team’s first game in this year’s Europa League competition, and the South Korean was asked about his future at the club as his contract continues to wind down.
Sonny fully focused on the present
Under Ange Postecoglou last season, the Lilywhites made substantial progress, not just in terms of league position, but also in establishing a fresh, exciting style of play and building a stronger relationship with the fans of the club.
It has been a slightly faltering start to the current campaign for Spurs, with disappointing defeats to Newcastle United and Arsenal followed by a scrappy win over Coventry City in the Carabao Cup last week.
Tottenham got back to winning ways at the weekend, though, with a convincing and entertaining 3-1 win over Brentford, and will be looking to carry that momentum into the clash with Qarabag in the Europa League tomorrow night.
It will be the start of a great opportunity for Spurs and Heung-min Son to finally lift a trophy after such a long wait, and speaking to the press (via Football.London), the forward was asked about the long-term picture of his future with the Lilywhites.
He said: “We haven’t talked [about a new contract] yet. It is very clear from me. I am very focused on this season. At this age every second is like a goal, especially this season we are in a lot of competitions, it feels like I am taking even more care on this.
“I am fully focused on this year and just want to win something that everyone at the club deserves. In the future you never know what will happen, but I will give everything for this club because it’s been 10 years I give everything.”
A new contract is expected for Son
Son’s current contract expires at the end of the season, and while the club does have the option to automatically extend that a further year, it is widely expected that a new deal will be put in place soon.
Alasdair Gold has previously said (via a Football.London Q+A) that the situation should be resolved fairly smoothly, given both parties are keen to come to an agreement.
Son’s new contract is a no-brainer
For me, there is nothing more important for Spurs to get sorted than to sign Sonny up for a new contract. He’s our leader, a club legend, and he clearly has a lot left to give. I just hope he gets that trophy for us this year and really writes himself into the club’s history books
