UN Chief and Pakistan’s Prime Minister discuss Afghanistan
On Tuesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres met with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly to discuss regional issues, particularly the situation in Afghanistan.
According to a statement from the UN Secretary-General’s office, the two leaders also discussed developments in the Middle East and other matters of mutual interest.
While the statement did not specify the topics discussed regarding Afghanistan, it is worth noting that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees had previously engaged in talks with the Pakistani government concerning the deportation of Afghan refugees.
Shehbaz Sharif traveled to New York to participate in this annual meeting. His speech at last year’s UN General Assembly drew a reaction from the Taliban.
In last year’s session, Sharif expressed his concerns about Afghanistan’s situation, warning that the country’s territory was being used against its neighbors.
The continued dialogue between global and regional leaders on Afghanistan’s challenges reflects the country’s ongoing instability and its impact on neighboring countries.
Pakistan’s involvement, particularly with Afghan refugees and cross-border security concerns, remains crucial for regional stability.
This comes amid the forced deportation of Afghan refugees, a dire humanitarian crisis, and ongoing human rights violations, particularly regarding the protection rights of Afghan refugees by Pakistani authorities.
