ACADIANA (KLFY) -- In just under two weeks, there have been several bicycle crashes in Acadiana. Three were deadly while two others left people in critical condition.

When it comes to bicycle safety, Louisiana State Police said it's important for all road users to prioritize safety and awareness.

Safety tips to remember when traveling on a bicycle are: wear a helmet and reflective clothing, stay alert, and avoid biking while impaired. Bikers must also have specific light reflectors on their bikes, such as white headlights in front, red lights in rear, and side-mounted reflectors.

Here's a look at recent crashes in Acadiana:

Sgt. Green said patrol officers assist in accidents of all measures, however, the Lafayette Police Department's Traffic Unit tends to investigate accidents involving fatalities and critical injuries.

"When it comes to the traffic section, they will get called out for major accidents involving fatalities, which means that someone died as a result of the accident or any of the injuries sustained by the individuals that were involved in the accident all so severe they have the potential that they may die from those injuries," Green said.
