New area code proposed for portions of NYC

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A new area code has been proposed for portions of New York City.

The new area code would be for the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Marble Hill section of Manhattan. A three-digit number for the proposed area code hasn’t been decided.

All existing wireline and wireless telephone customers in the 347/718/917/929 numbering plan area would keep their current 10-digit phone number. The proposed area code would be assigned to new phone numbers.

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator, which manages the telephone numbering plan in the United States, is seeking authorization for the new area code because available phone numbers in the 347/718/917/929 numbering plan area are projected to be exhausted near the end of 2026.

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator hopes the new area code will be approved in time to be implemented six months before available phone numbers are exhausted in 2026.

The New York State Public Service Commission plans to hold two virtual public hearings in October to receive comments regarding the area code proposal. To learn more about how to participate in the meetings, click here.
