VIDEO: Green fireball flashes across Oregon's night sky

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Cornelius resident’s security camera captured a neon green fireball streaking south across the Oregon sky on Sept. 23 at about 10:30 p.m.

Jim Todd, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry’s director of space science education, told KOIN 6 News that fireballs are burning space rocks made of ice, stone, metal or a combination of the three.

“Based on the video, it appears as a typical fireball — quick and bright,” Todd said. “Fireballs are caused by space rocks that enter the Earth's atmosphere and are slowed down and heated by friction. Objects that cause fireballs can be larger than one meter in size.”

Todd encourages people to report all fireball sightings to the AMS Fireball Log, which is the best source for determining a fireball’s origin and location, he said.

People with security cameras in the Portland area are encouraged to check their footage from last night.
