12-year-old charged with making school threat in Schenectady
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Schenectady Police announced the arrest of a minor following an investigation into a threat made to a local school. The 12-year-old child was charged with making a terroristic threat, a class D felony.
On Monday around 7:30 p.m., police were alerted to a threat made through a post on Snapchat which said "I'm shooting the school tmr." Detectives traced the post to a Mont Pleasant home using the device's IP address.
During the ensuing investigation, officers responded to the residence and spoke with a 12-year-old and his parent, who cooperated with police, resulting in the minor being detained and ultimately taken into custody. Police say the parent also voluntarily surrendered a shotgun for safekeeping, which was in the home but was not in the child's possession.
The Schenectady City School District confirmed that the child is a student at Mont Pleasant Middle School, further stating "We continue to be in close communication with the police, who advised us that no additional threat to safety has been identified."
