Troy Deeney names one Spurs star in Premier League Team of the Week
Troy Deeney is delighted to see James Maddison take games by the scruff of the neck, admitting that his performance against Brentford was the sort of display he expects from the Tottenham star.
Maddison is proving his critics wrong
Maddison has well and truly silenced his doubters at the start of the season, having started the campaign in the kind of form we saw in his first few months at Spurs.
Even though the 27-year-old had done well in the first few matches of the season, he was not getting the recognition he deserved, given that Tottenham were struggling to pick up wins.
However, everything came together for Maddison as well as for Ange Postecoglou’s side on Saturday, with the England international showcasing his class in a deeper role, helping the home side create chance after chance.
The former Leicester man scored the goal that sealed the result for the Lilywhites, producing a lovely, chipped finish after being played through on goal by Son Heung-min.
Maddison named in Team of the Week
Maddison was the only Spurs player to make Deeney’s Team of the Week, with the former Watford man writing in his BBC Sport column: “This is the game I’ve been waiting to see Madds do for a long, long time.
“Even though Brentford scored early he got in there and said ‘right, watch what I do’. He created loads of chances. I’ve been critical of him at times, I felt he has gone too short and not put himself in difficult positions. This was the perfect response.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Maddison showcased once again that he is not a one-trick pony and is good enough to play deeper in midfield if necessary.
It looks like Ange is going to persist with the Englishman and Kulusevski as number eights this season. If nothing else, that should make for extremely entertaining viewing.
