Harry Redknapp picks two Spurs players in his PL Team of the Week
Tottenham were back to winning ways in the league on Saturday, registering a 3-1 win over Brentford. A number of players stood out as having good games, but Harry Redknapp found space for two Spurs stars in his Premier League team of the week.
Destiny Udogie shines on the left
Destiny Udogie has been working his way back to full fitness after undergoing surgery at the end of last season. The young Italian put in a strong display for Spurs at the weekend, constantly posing a threat down the left wing, and he did enough to catch Redknapp’s eye.
Discussing his team of the week with Bet Victor, Redknapp said: “There’s a reason why Ange Postecoglou keeps picking Destiny Udogie and leaving him on for the full 90 minutes. He played really wide against Brentford, creating space for Heung-min Son to be a threat. It worked perfectly.”
James Maddison back to his best
Another player who has been striving to hit the highs of last season after injury issues is James Maddison. The playmaker has shown promising signs all season, but his performance against Brentford might just be his best yet in a Spurs shirt.
Redknapp added: “James Maddison was so impressive for Tottenham. They got off to a shaky start against Brentford and it could have all gone wrong. Instead, the fans witnessed a superb response. You can never feel safe at 2-1 and Maddison’s late clincher sealed the deal. He’s a confident, outstanding playmaker and I think he can be the difference for Spurs this season.”
Tactical tweaks were key
Ange Postecoglou has been accused of failing (or refusing) to adapt his tactics to get results, but that simply isn’t true, as we saw on Saturday. Most notably, he slightly altered the instructions for both the players mentioned here by Redknapp.
First, Destiny Udogie operated as more of a traditional wing-back, sticking to the touchline on the left as opposed to coming inside as an inverted full-back. This is quite a substantial change to Postecoglou’s usual setup, and it not only allowed Udogie to terrorise the Brentford full-backs but also gave Son far more space to play in a more fluid role both out wide and venturing more centrally, too
Second, James Maddison strayed out to the left hand side more than normal, interchanging with Son at times. Again, this gave the South Koream room to manoeuvre in the middle, and also opened up space for Dejan Kulusevski to come inside and play that number 10 role at times.
