The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

  • Austin Hays (kidney infection)
  • Status: 10-day IL
  • Hays was placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to Sept. 2) on Sept. 5 with a kidney infection. Cal Stevenson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his spot on the roster.
  • Hays went 2-for-9 with a walk and three runs scored across two rehab games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He’s at Citizens Bank Park Monday, and manager Rob Thomson said the plan is to “run him through his workout today and figure out what we do tomorrow.” (Updated by Tim Kelly on Sept. 23)

  • Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
  • Status: 60-day injured list
  • Turnbull last pitched in a game on June 26 at Detroit. He experienced a setback in mid-August, but is now trying to ramp up in an attempt to make a 2024 comeback as a reliever.
  • Across a two-inning rehab stint for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sept. 22, Turnbull allowed two hits and two earned runs while striking out two. According to Thomson, Turnbull “touched 94 mph” and while he did give up a home run, the Phillies were happy that he completed multiple innings.
  • The next step for Turnbull will be to throw live batting practice on Friday, with Thomson saying that he could potentially do three up-downs.(Updated by Tim Kelly on Sept. 23)

  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Minor league 60-day injured list; Expected back in 2025
  • The No. 1 overall prospect in the Phillies’ minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
  • Painter threw another live batting practice on Sept. 9 in Clearwater, Fla. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Sept. 10)

  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: 15-day injured list
  • Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)
