Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin were two of the biggest architects of Team India’s 280-run win over Bangladesh in the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai last week. While it was Bumrah’s six-wicket haul in the first innings which bundled out Bangladesh for 149, it was Ashwin’s all-round show with a century in the first and a six-wicket haul in the second innings which set up India’s massive win.
A day after the triumph and equaling Shane Warne’s record with a 37th five-wicket haul, Ashwin launched a new Hindi YouTube channel called ‘Ash ki baat’. Asked about Bumrah’s comments on him being the ‘fittest’ cricketer in the Indian team, the Rajasthan Royals all-rounder compared the pacer to a ‘truck’ or a ‘tipper lorry’ in particular.
“Why do you want to make a big deal out of it? Jasprit Bumrah is a fast bowler who bowls at 145 kmph in this heat. He is the crown jewel of Indian cricket like the Kohinoor diamond. Let him say whatever he wants. Just accept it,” Ashwin said on his newly-launched YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’.
“People will immediately say that how can Bumrah be the fittest cricketer if he got injured. There is a huge difference between a tipper lorry and a Mercedes Benz. The Mercedes Benz needs to be handled with care as its parts are very costly. A tipper lorry will have to travel long distances without rest,” he said.

“A fast bowler is like a tipper lorry. It breaks down sometimes. However, even after so much stress, Bumrah came back and bowled at 145 kmph. Give some credit to him,” Ashwin added.
‘I am waiting for Rohit Sharma’s birthday’
The Tamil Nadu off-spinner, who is India’s 2nd highest wicket-taker with 522 wickets in 101 Tests, also shared a hilarious exchange with skipper Rohit Sharma during the Test match.
“We were watching some highlights the day before yesterday. My wife told me something: ‘These off-spinners, won’t they be abusing you in their minds while bowling?’ I wondered why and realised they must be thinking ‘when will he leave for us to get a break?’ Suddently, I felt a little off. I realised, yes, I am in that phase now. Even when we were young, we used to wonder about our place in the side. Everbody does it. When I look at it now, it brings me to reality. I makes you realise you have played for a lot of years,” Ashwin said on his Youtube channel.
“I saw a graphic on the official broadcasting channel. They had put year-wise break-up and it ended with number 38. I am alone in that club. Then suddenly I saw Rohit, he was passing by. I asked him ‘when is your birthday?’ He said it was coming. I am waiting for his birthday. Then we will be of the same age for sometime,” Ashwin said.
