'Knew I'd get asked this': MAGA fans boo as Vance asked about embattled gov candidate

0

MAGA supporters booed Monday when a reporter asked Sen. J.D. Vance a question about whether North Carolina's Republican gubernatorial candidate ought to be disqualified following a bombshell report last week that he defended slavery and called himself a "Black Nazi" on a porn site's messaging board.

Nick Ochsner, executive producer of investigations and special projects and chief investigative reporter at WBTV, tried to raise the question at Vance's rally in the state, but was met with a chorus of boos.

"I want to ask you about Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson," said Ochsner. "The lieutenant governor was with you on stage with you and —"

Before he could finish the question, the crowd loudly booed.

"I'm trying to ask the question if you'll let me ask it," Ochsner pleaded with the crowd. "The lieutenant governor was on —"

As more boos rained down, Vance let out a smile and turned around to face supporters.

"I knew I'd get asked this," he said. "Go ahead."

Ochsner noted that Robinson was on stage for an Aug. 21 rally in the state, but Robinson was not on stage Monday.

"Is there something disqualifying about the comments uncovered by CNN that wasn't disqualifying about the previous comments he made?" asked Ochsner.

"Is that the question?" Vance replied, as more boos flew. "Here's my view on the lieutenant governor. First of all, what he said and didn't say is between him and the people of North Carolina. The people of North Carolina are going to make that decision."

Vance said he saw some of the statements but hadn't seen all of them.

"Some of them are pretty gross to put it mildly," said Vance. "Mark Robinson says that those statements are false. That he didn't actually speak them. So I think it's up to Mark Robinson to make his case to the people of North Carolina that those weren't his statements and I'm going to let him make that."

The audience cheered Vance, who added that he believes the entire saga reveals what's wrong with American news organizations.

Vance then launched into a rant blaming Vice President Kamala Harris' policies for record numbers of fentanyl deaths as well as record levels of unaffordable homes for young people, as well record number of people who can't afford groceries.

"The media ought to focus on Kamala Harris and her failure," he said, to applause.

He later insisted that the "sex scandal" is between the North Carolina lieutenant governor and its people, and "we support them."

As The New York Times reported, Trump has cozied up to Robinson, praising him multiple times for over a year.

In June 2023, Trump called him, "One of the great stars of the party." Trump officially endorsed Robinson in March 2024 and has referred to him as "Martin Luther King on steroids."
