Saratoga Co. confirms case of horse infected with EEE
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Saratoga County officials urge residents to protect themselves against mosquito-borne illnesses after a horse within the county was euthanized following a positive Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) diagnosis. Although no human cases have been documented in the county, officials said humans should remain cautious when spending long periods outside.
Officials said the horse was from Ballston and euthanized the same day it started showing symptoms of infection, Monday, Sept. 16 and was not vaccinated for EEE. The county said the chance of humans becoming infected may be low, but residents should take extra measures when spending time outside in the evening.
Residents can protect themselves from mosquito bites by using insect repellants, covering exposed skin with long sleeves, pants, and socks, and removing any standing water on their property where mosquitos are more likely to breed. Additionally, residents should check window screens to ensure they are tightly secured and free of rips, tears, or holes.
EEE infections in humans can be fatal as there's no treatment for the virus. Horse owners in Saratoga County can reduce the chances of infection by keeping horses in indoor stalls overnight.
In the Capital Region, the first human case of EEE since 2015 was confirmed in Ulster County on September 20. The disease was also found in two Emus in Renseelaer County and a horse in Washington County.
