COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The town of Colonie has unveiled a new memorial for Natalie Gillis, the Canadian pilot who died when her plane crashed on June 17.

Town officials revealed the stone marker memorial Monday morning outside the William K. Sanford Town Library, which is adjacent to the wooded area where the crash happened.

“Photographer, adventurer, poet and so much more, this world was fortunate to have someone who loved it as much as you did to your core," Colonie Town Council member Melissa Jeffers recited from a poem she wrote about Gillis.

Gillis, 34, was committed to environmental conservation, and would travel to remote corners of the world to photograph animals and scenery.

Town Supervisor Peter Crummey recalled talking with Gillis' brother following the crash about creating a memorial in her honor. Her family could not be present at the unveiling of the memorial, but passed along a message through Crummey.

"We wish we could be there for the memorial dedication, but we are very touched that Natalie is being remembered in such a beautiful way," Crummey read on the family's behalf.

The family also expressed gratitude to the first responders who answered the call that day. Members of the fire and police departments were present at the dedication.

People who live nearby that have never met Natalie came to see the stone marker unveiled and pay their respects. Residents have been frequently contributing flowers to another memorial that was set up at the site of the crash shortly after it happened.

The fact that everybody could pause for a minute and realize how much more damage could have occurred, and I think that blessing has resonance with the town residents for being grateful," Crummey said.

A new bench has been installed next to the stone, where people are invited to sit and reflect. Crummey said having the memorial on library property ensures it will be regularly maintained and taken care of.
