Three food pantries opening in Schenectady on Tuesday

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority (SMHA) announced that the grand opening of three permanent food pantries will be on Tuesday. The pantries will be in Lincoln Heights, Schonowee Village, and Ten Eyck Apartments.

These food pantries were made possible with a $51,000 grant from The Schenectady Foundation. This grant helped SMHA get the necessary appliances to store food safely along with other equipment to ensure the full functionality of the pantries.

The permanent locations of the food pantries will serve over 200 tenants, provide after-hours emergency food access, and offer one-on-one access to community services. The pantries will operate on a weekly schedule that allows residents to pick up food at their convenience while the Regional Food Bank will supply a diverse range of food for residents to choose from based on their dietary needs.

SMHA will be hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday at the Lincoln Heights Grocery Access Point on Veeder Avenue Extension at 3 p.m. to celebrate this grand opening. The event includes a facility tour.
