Netflix sets release date for Pablo Larrain’s ‘Maria’ with Angelina Jolie

Netflix will stream “Maria,” Pablo Larrain’s biographical film about opera singer Maria Callas, starting on December 11 with a limited theatrical release beginning on November 27.

The streamer also shared a new image from the film, which can be seen below.

Variety first reported the film’s official release date.

“Maria” is expected to be a major awards player for star Angelina Jolie. The Oscar-winning actress was last nominated in 2009 for “Changeling” and won an Academy Award in 2000 for “Girl, Interrupted.” In the new film, she stars as Callas, the famed performer who died in 1977 at age 53. The film chronicles the final years of Callas’ life.

Directed by Larrain, “Maria” stands as the unofficial capstone to the Chilean filmmaker’s trilogy of prominent women of the 20th century, after “Jackie” (about Jacqueline Kennedy) and “Spencer” (about Princess Diana). Those films landed actresses Natalie Portman (“Jackie”) and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”) nominations for Best Actress. Jolie currently sits in third place in the Gold Derby odds for Best Actress.

Netflix picked up “Maria” just before it premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it received strong reviews for Jolie. It’s the streaming platform’s latest collaboration with Larrain after Netflix released “El Conde” last year.

“I’m excited to partner again with the Netflix team who care so passionately about movies,” Larrain said previously. “This film is my most personal work yet. It is a creative imagining and psychological portrait of Maria Callas who, after dedicating her life to performing for audiences around the world, decides finally to find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself. I’m deeply honored to tell this story and share it with audiences worldwide like Maria did with her life.”

“Maria” has marched through the festival season following its Venice premiere. The film was also selected to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival and is part of the lineups at the New York Film Festival and AFI Fest.
