US Secret Service probes Elon Musk’s controversial post after Trump assassination attempt

0

The U.S. Secret Service is currently investigating a post made by Elon Musk on the social media platform X. Musk’s post followed a second assassination attempt on Donald Trump, where he remarked that no one had attempted to assassinate President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.

After the second attempt on Trump’s life, Musk posted, “And nobody is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala.” Following heavy criticism, Musk deleted the post, claiming it was meant as a joke.

Bloomberg reported that threats against the president or vice president are considered crimes and can result in hefty fines or up to five years in prison.

Later, Musk tried to justify his post, stating, “One lesson I’ve learned is that jokes are less funny when posted without context, just as text.”

Neither Musk nor his lawyer, Alex Spiro, responded to inquiries about whether the Secret Service had contacted them. The Secret Service has declined to provide details about the investigation, citing “operational procedures,” and has not disclosed any potential consequences for Musk.

The Secret Service also stated that it generally refrains from commenting on security matters and that the investigation is ongoing.

Elon Musk is a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate for the upcoming U.S. elections.

The controversy surrounding Musk’s post has drawn attention to the seriousness of online threats, especially when directed at public figures. The investigation may serve as a reminder of the legal implications of making such statements, regardless of intent.

Musk’s high-profile support for Trump and his influential presence on social media further amplify the potential impact of his remarks, adding weight to the ongoing Secret Service inquiry.
