The Great Mogul Diamond, was the largest diamond ever found in India, was unearthed in 1650 from the famed Golconda mines as a 787-carat rough stone. Venetian lapidary Ortensio Borgio was asked to cut the gem, a process later became infamous. In 1665, French jewel trader Jean-Baptiste Tavernier described the diamond as a high-crowned, rose-cut stone, but also noted a flaw in its base and a small speck within the gem. The price of this diamond is not known but it is estimated to be in crores.

The Misfortune of Diamond

Instead of cutting the diamond into several smaller stones, Borgio attempted to grind down the inclusions. This process resulted in the loss of a significant amount of weight, and disappointed the King. Shah Jehan, the emperor at the time, was not happy with the incident but still spared Borgio’s life, and asked him to pay a fine of 10,000 rupees, the sum total of his wealth, according to the report of wikipedia.

A Mystery of the Diamond

After the assassination of its last known owner, Nāder Shāh, in 1747, the diamond disappeared. Some speculate that the Great Mogul Diamond may have been recut into either the famous Koh-i-Noor or Orlov diamonds, according to the report of Britannica. Recent research suggests that the Great Mogul Diamond is most likely the Orlov Diamond, now part of Catherine the Great’s imperial Russian sceptre, housed in the Kremlin.

‘KohiNoor’ Diamond Of India

The Koh-i-Noor is another famous diamond that originated in India. It weighs about 105.6 carats and is considered one of the largest cut diamonds ever found. The Koh-i-Noor is part of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London.

The Jubilee Diamond is another large diamond from India that weighs 245.35 carats and is currently the sixth largest diamond in the world. It once belonged to Sir Dorabji Tata and played a role in bailing out Tata Steel.
