Gamethread: White Sox at Padres
Record loss No. 120, a 24th sweep, further shame, all on tap today in the finale!
OK, here we go, stretch run of the season, the final seven games. The White Sox already have clinched the worst record in franchise history and a tie for the worst 162-game record in history. Many more milestones still to knock down. Most immediately, it’s the 1962 Mets, an expansion team, with the most losses in the 162-game (and thus, ever, post-1899) era. That record likely is tied today.
The only intrigue, which is why our “tragic number” is not set to the 2003 Tigers or 1962 Mets (c’mon, those records falling have been a given for weeks), is whether the White Sox catch the 1916 A’s for essentially the “worst record ever” (post-1899 is pretty much ever, right, no counting walks as hits or pointing where you want the pitch or only white people playing). The “Good Guys” currently are a game worse than that 1916 pace, but the pedal has to stay on the metal, as Chicago needs to go 1-6 the rest of the way to take worst record ever outright. Going 2-5, which frankly seems the best-case scenario, would land the White Sox percentage points behind (“ahead”) of Philadelphia.
