Ancajas wins by DQ over frustrated Thai

MANILA, Philippines – Jerwin Ancajas settled for a win by disqualification over Thai Sukpraserd Ponpitak in the fifth round of their flyweight encounter on Sunday, September 22, at the packed Mandaluyong City College Gym.

The longtime former International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimumweight champion was dominant throughout and was patiently waiting for the kill when he got pushed down by the Thai for the third time, prompting the referee to halt the supposed 10-rounder with 2 minutes and 34 gone in the fifth.

It was more of a frustrated move by Ponpitak, who got knocked down with a sneaky right hook in the first round and was getting hurt in the succeeding rounds of the bout serving as chief support of Melvin Jerusalem‘s world title defense against Luis Castillo in Manny Pacquiao Presents: Blow by Blow.

The 32-year-old Ancajas, smarting from a shocking knockout loss to Takuma Inoue in Tokyo in February, raised his record to 35-4-2 with 23 knockouts.

Ponpitak dropped to 30-20 with 20 KOs.

Ancajas also rocked the Thai with an uppercut and a straight in the second, then continued to land blows in the third.

Exasperated, he wrestled Ancajas to the canvas and was slapped a one-point deduction.

Ancajas’ mastery extended in the fourth, where he again staggered the Thai with a solid straight.

The former world champion was highly motivated as his wife, Ruth, gave birth to their fifth child on Friday.

Elated by the outcome, Joven Jimenez, Ancajas’ longtime trainer, bared that MP Promotions head Sean Gibbons will be arranging for Ancajas to fight again in December.

Earlier, Gabriel Santisima pf ZIP Sanman Boxing Stable knocked out Jelo Bacalso with a crackling right hook to the jaw at the 2 minute and 8 seconds mark of the second round to climb to 6-0. Bacalso dropped to 6-6. – Rappler.com
