Alasdair Gold thinks one player just produced ‘his best performance in a Spurs shirt’

Alasdair Gold thinks that James Maddison’s display against Brentford was the best one he has produced in a Tottenham shirt to date.

Postecoglou stuck with a midfield three of Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski and Maddison, with the former Leicester City man operating in a left-sided number eight role once again.

That meant that he had the freedom to drop deep to pick up the ball and he did that to devastating effect, with the Brentford players struggling to get near him.

He effortlessly evaded his marker on a couple of occasions to send Tottenham on their way up the pitch while he was also at his probing best whenever he received possession near the edge of the box, with the England international unlucky not to have a couple of assists to his name.

However, Maddison did get his rewards eventually, netting his first goal of the season late on after being played through on goal by Son Heung-min.

Was that James Maddison’s best-ever Spurs performance?

Gold was mightily impressed by the attacking midfielder, handing him a rating of 10/10 for his showing on Saturday.

The journalist wrote on Football.London about Maddison: “Arguably his best performance in a Spurs shirt. Did well to intercept a pass before his shot was saved for Solanke to fire home.

“He then won the ball back for Tottenham’s second goal and was constantly twisting, turning and creating. Got a deserved goal with a lovely chipped effort late on.”

Maddison has well and truly shut up the critics at the start of the season and has made his doubters (which there were a few of at the start of the campaign) seem completely ridiculous. The 27-year-old is one of the players that makes this Tottenham side tick.
