Sky reveals TV catch-up will stop working on popular boxes in days unless customers upgrade

SKY viewers have been warned the company’s popular on-demand and catch-up service will stop working on some devices unless they upgrade very soon.

The broadcaster has been making a number of changes to move away from older kit recently.

Changes affect Apple TV boxes[/caption]

First, Sky is ending old SD (standard definition) broadcasts meaning some dated boxes will no longer receive many channels at all.

Then, the company shutdown its older iOS Sky Go app.

And now, Sky has its sights on Apple TV.

Support for Sky Go is being dropped on three versions of Apple TV’s software.

Impacted devices will no longer have access to the streaming service from Wednesday (September 25).

The move affects Apple TV’s tvOS 13, 14 and 15.

Fortunately, you can update to tvOS 16 to continue using Sky Go on Apple TV.

“To maintain the best experience on Sky Go, we sometimes have to end support for older operating systems,” a Sky rep wrote on the company’s website.

“From the 25th of September, Sky Go will no longer open on devices running on tvOS 13, 14 and 15.

“By updating to tvOS 16 or above, you’ll continue to be able to use Sky Go.”

tvOS 16 works on the following devices:

  • Apple TV HD (formerly known as the Apple TV 4th generation)
  • Apple TV 4K (1st generation)
  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
  • Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)

So if you haven’t upgraded already and want to continue watching Sky Go, now might be a good time to run that free update.

tvOS 16 is actually two generations older than the most recent version, tvOS 18, so the vast majority of viewers should continue to have access.

Don’t forget, there are lots of alternative ways you can still watch Sky Go, including:

  • iPhone
  • Android
  • PS5
  • PS4
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X/S
  • Amazon Fire TV Stick
  • Windows
  • Mac

Am I affected?

There are several Apple TV models around which can make it hard to figure out if you’re affected or not.

The easiest way is to go to Settings > General > About and look at tvOS.

If you see tvOS 16 or later you’re fine.

If you see tvOS 15 or earlier, you’re affected by the changes.

You should try to update your Apple TV by going to Settings > System > Software Updates.
