James Maddison was back to his best against Brentford

James Maddison believes that Heung-min Son is not just an excellent goalscorer but is also someone who creates a lot of chances for his teammates, due to his unselfish nature.

Son might have been disappointed not to get on the scoresheet against Brentford since he had some big opportunities which he failed to capitalise on which saw him score a 7 in our Tottenham v Brentford player ratings.

However, the Tottenham captain did look sharp all game and looked a threat in behind, combining well with Dominic Solanke on a couple of occasions at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Son picked up two assists, setting up Brennan Johnson in the first-half and James Maddison in the dying moments of the game to put the result beyond Brentford.

That took his tally of assists in the Premier League to 63, surpassing Christian Eriksen’s tally of 62, with only Spurs legend Darren Anderton having more assists for Spurs than the South Korean (Squawka).

Maddison opined that it is an area of his game that the forward does not get enough credit for and revealed that he just wanted to stay onside for his goal as he knew the pass would come.

After the match, the attacking midfielder told South Korean broadcaster SPOTV (22/9/24): “Sonny, as good a goalscorer as he is, gets a hell of a lot of assists because he’s not a selfish player. There was an incident 10 or 15 minutes before that (Tottenham’s third goal) where I played Sonny through on goal and he unselfishly passed to Brennan.

“He (Brennan) missed the shot but he (Sonny) could have had a shot himself right in front of goal cause he is very unselfish. I always knew there was a chance he was going to pass it (for Tottenham’s third goal) and not go himself. So I just stayed onside.”

Heung-min Son is still underrated outside of Tottenham

Son’s crossing and his final pass are up there with the best in the division, with the Tottenham captain always tending to get the timing of his pass right and putting the perfect weight on those balls, which is why he has clocked up as many assists as he has.

He certainly was not at his best against Brentford, and on a better day he could have had a goal for himself but for some reason looked hesitant to shoot on a couple of occasions.

Son forged a formidable partnership with Harry Kane at Tottenham Hotspur over a number of years which will take some beating.
