Spurs turmoil is ‘necessary’ to achieve grand ambitions – Ange Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou says he never expected everything to be smooth sailing at Tottenham Hotspur, insisting that there would always be an element of turmoil when undertaking a major rebuild.

When Postecoglou arrived at Spurs last summer, he was tasked with completely changing the team’s style of play and taking the club in an entirely new direction.

The 59-year-old did manage to achieve that last season, and many will consider his first campaign at the North London club to be a success, especially considering that Tottenham lost Harry Kane on the eve of the competition.

Expectations have understandably risen following Spurs’ fifth-place finish last season but things have not started on a positive note in 2024-25, with Postecoglou’s men having picked up just seven points out of a possible 15 on offer so far.

It might get worse before it gets better

The Tottenham boss’ methods are thus being severely scrutinised but he claims it is nothing more than he expected, with the 59-year-old insisting the club are not going to get to where they want without going through some unrest.

Postecoglou told Football.London: “Whenever there is change, significant change, it unsettles people. It is human nature, you kind of want comfort and security but again, I came in here to try and do something that hasn’t been done for quite a while.

“My view is – and I’ve done that wherever I’ve gone – you can’t just think me walking in is the answer. You’ve got to change things and when that happens, it is unsettling for people both internally and externally but I think it is a necessary part of trying to achieve what we need to.”

While one has to admire Ange’s unshakable confidence in himself and his methods, the reality is that we have not seen his approach succeed at this level yet.

Until he proves that he can do that, there will be critics and doubters. That is football – an annoying part of football, yes – but a part of football nonetheless.
