Postecoglou says Spurs star took the blame for Arsenal defeat behind the scenes
Ange Postecoglou admits that he is a big fan of Cristian Romero, suggesting that the Argentine embodies the sort of mentality he wants at Tottenham.
Cristian Romero is a mentality monster
One of the first big decisions that Postecoglou made when he arrived at Tottenham last summer was to make Romero part of the club’s new leadership group, with the Australian handing the vice-captaincy to the centre-back.
That was a big show of faith, considering that the 26-year-old had blown hot and cold in his first two seasons at Spurs, but the defender repaid his manager’s faith, being one of the club’s best players last season.
However, Romero has had a bit of a tricky start to the new campaign, having some uncharacteristic defensive lapses that have cost his side goals.
This includes Arsenal’s winner in the North London Derby, with Gabriel Magalhaes managing to evade his attention too easily to get a free header.
Romero took responsibility for Arsenal defeat
Postecoglou admitted that Romero was disappointed with his defending on that occasion but suggested that the centre-back is keen to make amends.
When asked about whether the defender took responsibility for Arsenal’s winner, Postecoglou told Football.London: “He is and he wasn’t happy about it.
“He also knows these things happen in football and it’s how you respond. I love him as a player and a person and the way he trains and conducts himself. He’s a winner.
“I was asked the other day if it’s important to have people in the building who’ve won things and he’s the living embodiment of that but it doesn’t make you bulletproof. You’ll have days when it doesn’t work out for you.
“He was disappointed he couldn’t do more in that space. It wasn’t just him though, it was a combination of things that cost us that goal and a combination of things that cost us that game. But it’s not like he’s gone into his shell afterwards. He wants to get back out there and make amends.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Given the way that we play, our centre-backs have to remain concentrated for 90 minutes and cannot afford to switch off as Romero has done on a couple of occasions this season.
However, we know the Argentine’s quality and there is no doubt that he remains one of our most important players, being the leader of this young backline.
