Offense Clicks, Díaz Records Four Out Save in Mets 6-3 win
When it’s September and the playoffs are on the line, you must find a way to win. The New York Mets, without Francisco Lindor for the sixth straight game and Zach Wheeler looming on Sunday night, found a way to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 on Saturday. The win was led by a strong pitching performance from Sean Manaea, who has been the Mets unquestioned ace throughout this run. Once again, he pitched like an ace. Timely hitting also played a factor thanks to Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Alvarez. All capped off by a 4-out save by Edwin Díaz.
Sean Manaea Leads The Mets Again
After a bad start from David Peterson on Friday, which resulted in a 12-2 loss to the Phillies, Sean Manaea had to give the Mets a good outing in a must-win game. He had to get the Mets back on track. Manaea went 7 innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza tried to get Manaea through the 8th inning but took him out after a single by J.T. Realmuto. Manaea gave the Mets a chance as the game was tied 2-2 entering the 7th inning when the Mets broke through. In a big spot, Manaea was clutch on Saturday.
Mets Offense Comes Through Late
The Mets offense was 3-for-12 with RISP, and Mark Vientos struck out five times, and yet key core players such as Nimmo and Álvarez got the big hits when it mattered. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Nimmo blooped an RBI single into right field to score Starling Marte. That was followed by Álvarez notching a double that scored Pete Alonso and Nimmo. That gave the Mets a 5-2 lead. After the Phillies got a run back in the 8th, the Mets got some insurance in the bottom half. Alonso blooped a base hit into centerfield that scored Jose Iglesias.

Player Of The Game: Francisco Álvarez
Álvarez was big again for the Mets on Saturday as his hot streak continued. Álvarez’s three RBIs, which included a home run, propelled the Mets to a big win.

It’s the Mets’ last regular-season home game on Sunday night as they send Tylor Megill to the mound against Wheeler. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN at 7:15 p.m. EDT and broadcast on WCBS 880.
