112 touches, 2/9 long balls, 0 crosses: 5ft 10in star was United's worst player vs Crystal Palace, needs to step up - opinion
Manchester United played out a frustrating 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
The Red Devils dominated the proceedings in the opening half at Selhurst Park and they should have been two or three goals ahead.
Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes hit the woodwork while goalkeeper Dean Henderson made a number of spectacular saves.
The second half was evenly contested. The Red Devils could have lost the game if not for Andre Onana’s extraordinary double save.
There were plenty of positives to carry forward, but Fernandes should be disappointed after another lacklustre attacking display.
The United captain has registered 17 shots in the Premier League this season. This is presently the highest without scoring a single goal.
Against Palace, he lacked the cutting edge in the final third. Fernandes lost possession on a staggering 34 occasions over 90 minutes.
The 5ft 10in star had 112 touches in the game, but he completed just two out of nine long balls.
Fernandes, who had a passing accuracy of 72 percent, had six unsuccessful crosses on the day.
It was a bizarrely poor performance from the skipper who has been the club’s main creator.
The 30-year-old has yet to register a goal or an assist in the top-flight campaign and hopefully, he can turn his fortunes around soon.
United will be in Europa League action against FC Twente on Wednesday night before hosting Tottenham Hotspur in the league on Sunday.
Fernandes needs a strong performance in midweek ahead of the key encounter against Spurs at home.
