I wanted a cheap way to get privacy from my neighbours so came up with a genius method to shut them out for just £33

A MAN has shared how he came up with the perfect way to make a privacy fence for just £33.

Patrick Cronin wanted to shield his house and garden from prying eyes, but didn’t want to shell out loads on a purpose-made privacy fence.

And as it was to go on top of a shorter wall, a traditional fence wouldn’t work.

So Patrick decided to repurpose some scaffolding poles, fixing them wall to wall.

“I used scaffolding poles for a few reasons,” he told Fabulous Online.

“They’re strong and galvanised, very uniform to put in place and, as I had excess to spare, it was handy way to use them up and recycle.”

He then came up with a clever idea to use rope to finish off the fence.

“I purchased 150m of marine hemp rope and made a pattern, using existing upright poles,” he explained.

“I didn’t slip the rope but divided it in bunches of 3 or 4 and pushed through each space.”

In total, the fence took him six hours, and he was “so delighted with the finished result”.

He also worked out that the whole fence cost him around 40 Euros in total, which converts to £33, as he already had the scaffolding poles and just had to shell out for the fixings and the rope.

“Always prefer to reclaim and recycle, giving old things a new life!” Patrick concluded.

Homeowners around the world have turned to privacy fences to protect their abodes from neighbours‘ stares.

“Privacy fencing, of course, appeals to homeowners who are hoping for a bit more seclusion in their backyard, commonly around swimming pools or between property lines,” Matt Michaels, a spokesman for Lowe’s Home Improvement, said.

“It’s also a great way to increase security.”

How high can a garden fence be?

Despite what many people think a garden fence can be as high as 100m but you need to get planning permission for any fence taller than 2m.

Any fence under 2m does not need planning permission.

However, there are some complications to this.

If you are thinking about front garden fences, restrictions state that fences alongside a driveway can be a maximum of 1m or 3ft.

You would need to get planning permission for putting a trellis on a fence of 2m.

But, if any plant that you grow on that trellis exceeds 2m, you do not need to obtain a permit for the growing plant.

Privacy fences are also a great way to keep kids and pets safe and contained in the garden.

“Not only are you keeping your pets in, but you could also be keeping other animals out,” he added.

And while it’s not required to speak to your neighbours about adding a privacy fence, it’s considered common courtesy to do so.
