Ashwin and Jadeja star as India destroys Bangladesh by 280 runs in first Test
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin completed a memorable all-round outing with a 6-wicket haul as a dominant India crushed Bangladesh by 280 runs on the fourth day of the opening Test to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series on Sunday.
Set a mammoth target of 515, Bangladesh got bowled out for 234 in their second innings, with first-inning centurion Ashwin (6/88) doing the bulk of the damage at his home ground in Chennai.
Ravindra Jadeja also picked up 3 wickets including the crucial wicket for Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto who was batting on 82.
The visitors were 158/4 when bad light had stopped play on the third day. India declared their second innings at 287 for 4 riding on hundreds from Rishabh Pant (109) and Shubman Gill (119) for an overall lead of 514.
On day 4, the spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja did a fantastic by picking up 3 wickets each and absolutely dominated on the Chennai pitch.
For his brilliant performance throughout the match with both the bat and the ball, Ashwin was deservedly awarded with the Player of the Match award.
The Test action will resume on September 27 when both teams will again lock horns in Kanpur for the second and final Test of the series.
