Bicyclist killed in Friday afternoon Jeff Davis Parish crash
JENNINGS, La. (KLFY) -- A Jennings man was killed Friday afternoon after being hit on his bike by a pickup truck on U.S. 90, authorities said.
The crash claimed the life of 19-year-old Kaleb Istre of Jennings.
Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash at about 4 p.m. Friday involving a bicycle on U.S. 90 near La. 1126 in Jeff Davis Parish.
Police said Istre was riding a bicycle westbound on U.S. 90 in the westbound lane of travel. At the same time, a Ram pickup truck, driven by Felton Duhon Jr. of Jennings, was traveling westbound on U.S. 90 behind East. For reasons still under investigation, the front of the Ram pickup struck the bicycle from the rear, causing Istre to be ejected.
Istre died at the scene. Duhon and his passenger were not injured.
Standard toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers would like to remind motorists of the "3-Foot Rule" when passing cyclists. According to Louisiana law, drivers must exercise caution and leave at least three feet of space when overtaking a bicycle moving in the same direction. This safe distance must be maintained until the vehicle has completely passed the cyclist.
